I recently visited The Samosa Master Inc in Newmarket and encountered a concerning billing issue. I purchased basic grocery items like khakhra and MTR Rice Idli, which, under the current tax exemption policy (effective December to February), should be exempt from tax as per Bill C-78. However, I was charged tax on these items despite them being clearly eligible for exemption.

To ensure this wasn’t a misunderstanding, I double-checked the government’s policy and even raised the issue in the WhatsApp group South Asians in Newmarket to seek community input and raise awareness. Unfortunately, instead of receiving support or clarification, I was removed from the group without any explanation. This was disappointing, as I was simply trying to highlight an issue that impacts all customers.

To further verify the exemption, I later purchased the same products from Walmart, where no tax was applied. This clearly shows that other retailers are adhering to the tax exemption policy, but The Samosa Master Inc is not.

This isn’t just about a small tax discrepancy—it’s about ensuring fairness and compliance with provincial regulations. Businesses must stay informed about policies to avoid overcharging customers due to negligence or oversight.

I strongly encourage the management at The Samosa Master Inc to review their billing practices, ensure staff are properly trained on tax exemption policies, and make the necessary corrections to prevent this from happening in the future. To fellow customers, I recommend checking your receipts during this exemption period and speaking up if you notice any discrepancies.

Transparency and accountability are essential for maintaining trust. I hope the store takes immediate action to rectify this issue..
