The lack of care in this hospital is startling and nothing short of criminal. Dr Naghdi was in charge of my sister and had made an assessment before I came from BC to see her as what my sister was saying was unimaginable. I came to assess for myself spending 8-13 hrs with her in the hospital and was undoubtedly convinced that she was being groomed for long term care by this hospital. I saw Dr Naghdi the first day I arrived when she popped her head in to say she wanted a family meeting to talk about end of life care and that was the one and only time she appeared during my 2 weeks. What I witnessed is my sister who could do all basic things for herself like feeding eating and going to the bathroom on her own for the first 12 days reduced to being restricted to her bed the day after the family meeting. Her attending doctor Dr Hays was wonderful but he made no appearance after the family meeting. I kept a daily record of everything my sister was doing to the degree of how much she ate and what she ate, bathroom visits and what went into the bowl.
Yesterday Nov 23 they refused to assist me to walk her to bathroom as she was obviously not able to do it on her own as her pain was high . After 20 minutes her nurse Jessica assisted me and she was able to go. Later the same day, sister asked to go again but Jessica would not aid and said Iâll tell the night nurse despite the fact she was standing by the bed. She disappeared and no one showed up with a commode or to assist when finally I had to shout out as my sister was desperate to go and refused to do it in her clothes. After half hr, 3 nurses showed up with a commode and made huge display of how unstable my sister was on her feet despite the fact Iâve attended her on my own for 12 days and all we needed was one nurse to aid me to take her or bring a commode as I have assisted my sister solely multiple times that day getting her up in chair to eat and just move around.
They were pissed that my sister refused to soil herself and at me for insisting either a commode or assistance to walk her 10 ft to the bathroom which is what my sister wanted to do.
Immediately the nurses decided she was to go into an electronic bed and in anger they brought one in and started to lower the electric bed which has a protruding section at the bottom of the bed. This part was being lowered directly onto her knee until I shouted to stop. Not one of the two nurses showed any concern or apologized for the near miss.
I put my sister back into bed myself after they left as she is solid on her legs but weak.
When I got in this morning they had inserted a catheter into her when she can and want to pee on her own. This patient has one kidney and they choose to do this procedure which has high risk of infection vs aid her to bathroom or a commode.
It is now 2:00pm and they have yet to take her out of bed to sit up even. Since her bed has alarms it continually alarms each time I roll her over to give her some relief from her pain that is accumulating.
My advice to anyone reading this is what you see in visiting is not a reflection of what is happening. There are 3 other patients in this room and each family have similar experiences.
It seems to be more an issue with doctors orders vs nurses as they are âjust doing what they are toldâ but sadly is a huge problem at this hospital. My sister was in room 112 directly across from nurses station and twice yesterday they refused aid to get her to bathroom or bring a commode so it is obvious to me that they insist she must go in her clothes as then her assessment of care will result in needing much more than is truly needed and she will be moved directly into long term care; long before she needs that level of care. They have simply given up on her.
